How to Measure Your Bra Size at Home

You need a soft measuring tape and five minutes.

Measure your band first. Wrap the tape around your ribcage directly under the bust, snug and level all the way round. Breathe out and read the number. Round to the nearest even figure, so 32, 34, 36, and upward. That is your band size.

Then measure your bust. Wrap the tape around the fullest part, keeping it level, without pulling tight.

Subtract the band from the bust. One inch of difference is an A cup. Two inches is a B. Three is a C, four is a D, five is a DD, and six is an E.

Measure over a non-padded bra or bare skin, never over clothing or a padded cup, or every number will be off.

Measure again once a year. Size changes with weight, age and after pregnancy. The size you bought three years ago is often not the one you need now.

How a Bra Should Fit

Run through these checks with anything new.

The band should sit level all the way round. If it rides up at the back it is too loose, and since the band does around eighty percent of the support work, that load shifts straight onto your shoulders.

Two fingers under the band, no more. Fasten a new bra on the loosest hook. As the elastic stretches over months, you move inwards to the tighter hooks and get far more life out of it.

Straps should not dig in. Marks on the shoulders mean the band is too loose, not that the straps need tightening further.

Cups should sit flat. Spilling over means the cup is too small. Gaping or wrinkling means it is too large.

The centre panel should touch your chest. If it sits away from the body, the cup is too small for the band you have chosen.

Which Bra for Which Situation

For daily wear at home and out, take a cotton or comfort style, non-wired. For anything fitted or thin, a T-shirt bra keeps the line smooth. For long hours at a desk or on your feet, full coverage and wire-free is the more wearable choice. For formal and occasion wear, a padded wired style gives the shape you want under structured clothing. For exercise, take a proper sports bra rather than making an everyday one do the job. For nursing, a feeding bra saves a great deal of difficulty.

How to Make a Bra Last

Hand wash where you can. A machine cycle twists and stretches the band, which is the part that determines how long the bra stays supportive.

If you do machine wash, fasten the hooks first so they do not catch on other clothing, use a mesh bag, and keep the cycle gentle.

Never wring it out. Twisting destroys the elastic in the band and the straps. Press the water out instead.

Dry flat in shade. Direct sun and heat break down elastic faster than anything else, and hanging a wet bra by the straps stretches them permanently.

Do not wear the same one two days of running. Elastic needs a day to recover its shape, and this single habit does more for bra lifespan than any washing method.

Replace it when the band stops holding on the tightest hook. At that point, it has stopped supporting you, regardless of how it still looks.
